Fritz Lauenstein - Fritz Glass- Marble Maker
Fritz Lauenstein was born in Chicago, Illinois and grew up in Wenham, Massachusetts. He went to a boarding school, Gould Academy, in Bethel, Connecticut and in high school encountered glassblowing in an elective class. He subsequently attended Goddard College and Massachusetts College of Art and learned about furnace design and glass techniques from 1978 to 1983.
Returning to Cape Cod in 1984, where he had summered with his grandparents as a child, he worked as a commercial fisherman, a production potter, and in a Brewster gallery, The Spectrum, before starting to work for James Holmes at Chatham Art Glass.
After four years with Jim, he set out on his own, starting Fritz Glass in 1990 with his partner, June Raymond. For eighteen years they have been designing both functional and decorative glass which has been shown and sold in museums and over two hundred galleries, predominantly in the United States.
They currently operate their studio in Dennisport, Massachusetts where they live with their ten-year old daughter, Coco, born in 1998. He continues to carry on family traditions of fishing on Cape Cod and being involved in their community. They have been supported for years by a loyal following of family, friends, customers, and various other craftspeople.
