From 60,000 miles away - The Glass Galaxies of Josh Simpson
Josh Simpson is an internationally acclaimed glass artist. His pieces are in collections all over the world and he is the recipient of numerous awards. He is a unique "voice" among the first generation of studio glass artists. Josh Simpson is unusual in that his are is a "formation through fire and heat, which matches up perfectly with his subject matter: the creation of earth and universe.
An explorer at heart, Simpson continues to seek new formulas and design ideas that challenge him and inspire others. "So much has already been done," he says, "but there is always room for further creativity and originality." Interestingly, Simpson's fascination with Astronomy is something he shares with his family. His wife, Cady Coleman, is an accomplished astronaut who has made multiple trips to space. She is presently in training for a voyage to the International Space Station in November. There are moments when she is in space that Simpson looks to the stars and has a special awareness of the potential to travel among them, and his work is often inspired by photographs that she has taken from the Space Shuttle. Her images are not only stunningly beautiful, but also have a deep personal meaning. Simpson similarly captures our imagination through his intricate glass worlds and the elegant, elaborate patterns of his New Mexico and Corona glass. His creations are an invitation to join him in dreaming about all that is yet to be discovered in the universe.
