During the latter half of the 19th century, kerosene became the lighting fuel of choice in most homes. The lamps, which held this relatively safe and inexpensive fuel were made of various materials including glass. Most glass kerosene lamps were utilitarian and provided task lighting. Kerosene was also used to light the most elegant of spaces including the parlor.
