Take your flameworking further in this intermediate borosilicate class focused on complex shaping, controlled gathers, and multi-part construction. Students will explore how the way glass is gathered and applied can create structure and detail—forming elements like muscles, joints, spikes, and claws with intention and control.
This class introduces more advanced sculptural building techniques, including working both directly on the torch and assembling separate components using punties and kiln-assisted joins. You’ll learn how to safely move between the kiln and torch, how to manage heat for different stages of construction, and how to combine multiple parts into a single cohesive sculpture.
Students will also be introduced to reduction flames and how flame chemistry affects surface, color, and finish—adding another layer of depth to their work.
This is a hands-on, problem-solving class designed to expand your technical skills while pushing your sculptural glass work into more dynamic, expressive forms.
Safety & What to Expect
This class is held at our HyArts Campus Flamework Studio
Working with borosilicate glass involves high temperatures, open flame, and advanced handling techniques. All participants must wear 100% cotton or linen clothing (no synthetic fabrics), along with closed-toe shoes. Long hair must be tied back securely before class.
Protective eyewear will be provided and may be required at certain stages of the class due to increased complexity of flame work and glowing glass handling.
All finished components must be properly kiln-annealed overnight to ensure strength and durability. Completed work will be available for pickup the following day.
