Education Director – SGM Glass Academy
Location: Sandwich Historical Society & Glass Museum, 129 Main Street, Sandwich MA
Reports To: Executive Director Mary Childs
Position Summary
The Sandwich Historical Society and Glass Museum (aka the Sandwich Glass Museum) is a town history museum and contemporary glass art gallery located in the heart of historic Sandwich Village on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The Museum features hourly live glassblowing demos, extensive galleries of both historic and contemporary glass, a kid-friendly experiential play space, and a gift shop. We currently offer glass crafting classes in glass fusing and glassblowing, and are planning to greatly expand our glass related educational offerings in 2026 and beyond. The Education Director is responsible for leading, developing, and implementing all educational programs for the SGM Glass Academy, serving learners of all ages. This role blends creative program design, operational management, community engagement, and strategic fundraising to ensure the Academy fulfills its mission to inspire, educate, and expand public appreciation of glassmaking and historic crafts.
The successful candidate will oversee the Academy’s classes, workshops, and outreach programs, including free and low-cost opportunities funded by grants and donations. They will manage teaching staff, coordinate schedules, maintain safety and quality standards, and develop innovative programming that supports the Museum’s educational goals and long-term sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
Program Development & Delivery
- Design, implement, and evaluate a diverse range of glass art and craft classes and workshops (fused glass, sandblasting, glassblowing, and additional seasonal programs, youth and family offerings).
- Expand educational offerings in alignment with Museum goals, including the Discover GlassRoom, field trips, after-school programs, and special events.
- Develop curriculum and lesson plans that balance artistic creativity with historical context and technical skills.
- Ensure all programs are accessible, inclusive, and mission-driven.
Staff & Volunteer Leadership
- Recruit, train, and supervise teaching artists, assistants, and education volunteers.
- Coordinate scheduling and staffing for classes, demonstrations, and events.
- Foster a collaborative, supportive, and safe working environment.
Operations & Administration
- Manage class schedules, enrollment systems, and participant communications.
- Oversee budgets for educational programs, including supplies, equipment, and staffing.
- Maintain studio safety protocols, equipment care, and compliance with OSHA and museum safety policies
Community Engagement & Partnerships
- Cultivate relationships with schools, community organizations, and arts groups to grow participation and awareness.
- Represent the Glass Academy at community events, conferences, and museum programs.
- Collaborate with Museum staff to integrate education into exhibitions and special events.
Fundraising & Grants
- Work with the Executive Director and Development team to identify and pursue funding opportunities.
- Develop proposals for education-related grants and sponsorships.
- Track and report program outcomes to funders and stakeholders.
Qualifications
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in arts education, museum programming, or similar field.
- Experience in glass art techniques strongly preferred; willingness to train in specific processes required.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Proven ability to develop engaging educational content for diverse audiences.
- Knowledge of safety protocols for art studios, especially hot glass and other working studio environments.
- Proficiency with Social Media platforms, Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Canva, spreadsheets, and scheduling/registration software.
Schedule & Compensation
- Full-time, on-site, salaried position with occasional evenings/weekends for events and classes.
- Salary commensurate with experience.
