Heartbeats and Harmony

On view from June 21st - November 2nd, 2024

The Sandwich Glass Museum proudly presents “Heartbeats & Harmony” a collective exhibition of works by glass artist Robert Dane and painter Carl Lopes. Based on their mutual love of Afro-Caribbean music, this exhibition features glass sculpture and imagery reflecting admiration and inspiration drawn from Afrocentric culture.

“Without a doubt, this marvelous exhibition at one of my favorite New England museums, The Sandwich Glass Museum, is an exciting, aesthetically rich, tour de force which will tantalize your eyes and enrich your soul. Robert and Carl have, indeed, put their hearts and souls into creating this superb experience for you to enjoy”

- Charles A. Shepard III, President & CEO, Fort Wayne Museum of Art

Carl Lopes is a Cape Cod based multimedia artist whose great grandparents immigrated in the 1890’s from the islands of Cape Verde. Growing up, his family surrounded him with a rich culture full of tradition, dance and music. Through his artwork, he channels the customs of his heritage by embracing the designs, rituals and energies of African Diaspora.

Robert Dane’s appreciation of Afro-Cuban music and culture has inspired him to create this unique body of work. Dane’s latest sculptures, blown in glass, embrace the costuming and music found in rituals and ceremonies. Incorporating the fine techniques from the Venetian glass masters, Dane expresses patterns, designs and the dynamic use of color in these exquisite figures and animals.
